Bardo’s Position on Chat Control

Published: July 14, 2026

Chat Control 1.0 has now been adopted in the European Union, creating a legal framework for online services to scan private content that passes through or is stored on their servers.

Bardo does not store your notes, files, or other personal content on our servers. Your data remains on your device. There is no Bardo cloud containing your private notes, which means there is nothing on our servers that can be scanned.

We may introduce optional cloud synchronization in the future. However, this feature will not be available to users in the European Union.

If cloud synchronization is launched, Bardo will withdraw from the EU market entirely. Our products will no longer be distributed or officially supported within the European Union, while cloud synchronization will remain available in countries where private user data is not subject to these requirements.

We will not create a separate European version of Bardo that scans private notes. We will not weaken encryption, introduce surveillance mechanisms, or compromise our users' privacy simply to remain available in the EU.

Our position is simple: we would rather leave the European market than put your private notes, files, and personal information at risk.
